Maximum tenancy stay
You can live with us for a maximum of six years. The tenancy period is calculated as the total rental period of all tenancy agreements you have held with us as the contract holder. Any time spent as a subtenant or co-tenant is not included.
After living with us for a total of approximately 5.5 years, you will receive a notification that you have been blocked and will receive a notice of termination. This block means that you can no longer apply for a free term, sublet your accommodation, or register interest in a new accommodation within our housing stock. The block is permanent and remains in effect even if you have been granted an exemption.
Applying for an Exemption from the Maximum Tenancy Period
In certain cases, you may be granted an exemption from the maximum tenancy period and therefore be allowed to stay longer than six years.
You may be granted an exemption if you:
- Have been unable to complete your studies within six years due to compelling medical or social reasons. Applications for exemption should be submitted to the Housing Committee. You can find more information about how to apply here. Exemptions can be granted for up to one year at a time, for a maximum of two years.
- Are enrolled in a doctoral (PhD) programme. In this case, please submit a certificate using the template available here. Exemptions can be granted for up to one year at a time, for a maximum of four years.
Applications for exemption from the maximum tenancy period must be received by us or the Housing Committee no later than three months before the end of the tenancy agreement, as stated in the notice of termination.
